Military time (sometimes referred to as "24 hour time") is a system of telling the time that is based on the 24 hour clock. In this system, each hour of the day is assigned a unique code, ranging from 0001 (midnight) to 2400 (midnight of the following day). Thus, 2215 military time would refer to 10:15 PM (or 2:15 in the afternoon, if using a 12-hour clock).
Military time has many advantages over the standard 12-hour clock, the most important being that it eliminates the need to distinguish between AM and PM. This makes it useful in a wide range of situations, such as aviation, military and medical operations where quick and precise communication is essential.
Another advantage of military time is that it reduces confusion when multiple time zones are involved. With the 12-hour clock, the same time can be communicated in different ways in different time zones, resulting in miscommunication and time-keeping errors. However, when using the 24-hour clock, times can be clearly communicated in any time zone.
It is also worth noting that military time is not the same as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). While both operate on 24-hour clocks, the UTC uses a zero-based system, which means that 0000 is midnight and 1200 is midday. The military time system does not have zero-based numbering, so 0000 is actually 2400.
